Dinnertime in Trouville

 

One of my favorite trips was to Normandy in 2014. My mother and I were walking in Trouville in the late afternoon, after spending the day in Honfleur. I wanted to see the beaches that inspired Monet. Some of the houses are the same ones that existed when he painted. One of my favorite areas was near the fish market. I really wanted to stop for oysters, but we had the need to explore and take photos. This painting depicts the energy of the evening with people eating towers of seafood while others took their evening walks in the sun, either before or after dinner. As you can tell by the jackets, it was cool outside, but everyone wanted to be in the sun. Oil on 16"h x 20"w stretched linen. SOLD.

Honfleur Marina

A view of the Honfleur Marina in the morning on the way to get coffee from an outside cafe. Unfortunately, I was not able to get a great photo of the painting. It has much more depth and complexity in person. My studio doesn't have much space and I have very basic lighting to work with, so sadly, this photo doesn't show the painting as it really is. Fortunately, it has been displayed in galleries where people were able to see it in person. Oil on 36"h x 48" stretched canvas. SOLD.

Honfleur Promenade

A view of the promenade in Honfleur, France. It is lined with shops, restaurants and cafes. Next time I visit, I plan to take my art supplies with my so I can paint the lively town scene while I sip my coffee. This painting was painted from a reference photo that I took while visiting in 2014. Oil on 24"h x 36"w stretched canvas. This painting was at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Ligonier, PA as part of the show I had with my mother, Jolene Joyner, called "Looking for the Light in Dark times." SOLD.

Honfleur Cafes

The painting was inspired by the peaceful cafe scene in Honfleur, France. The air is still crisp on a May morning before the town becomes lively with tourists. SOLD.

Morning in Honfleur

It was a sunny spring morning in Honfleur with a bit of haze in the hills. I was always inspired by the paintings of Eugene Boudin, so my mom, a friend, and I stayed in Deauville, and took day trips to Honfleur and Trouville from there. I was able to see the beaches and marinas that inspired both Boudin's and Monet's paintings. Honfleur is peaceful in the mornings while shopkeepers and artists set up their shops for the day. After circling the marina a couple of times to see the buildings and boats from all angles, my mom and I stopped for an espresso at a dock-side cafe, then got lost in the town's alleyways. Morning Walk on Deauville Beach

Only one person walked on Deauville Beach in Normandy, France this particular morning (besides me.) The 1 1/2" deep edges of the gallery wrapped linen are painted raw umber, and the painting comes ready to hang. Oil on linen, 14"h x 18"w. SOLD.

Honfleur Marina

Boats linger in the Honfleur marina anticipating a full day of sailing. The sailors are probably sitting at one of the cafes drinking espresso. This painting is on a 28"h x 22"w x 1 1/2"d gallery wrapped canvas with finished raw umber-colored edges. It comes ready to hang.

Deauville Beach Umbrellas

People lounge amid a sea of umbrellas on the beach at Deauville, France. Because it was late in the day, the beach wasn't very crowded and only some umbrellas were unfolded. Despite the cool May weather, people rolled up their pant legs and shirt sleeves in order to get some sun. This painting is on 8"h x 6"w x 1/8" thick Ray Mar canvas panel, and will require a frame in order to hang. SOLD.

Trouville Alley

Some of the colorful buildings of Trouville, France hide a narrow, mysterious alley. One can walk up the town's alleys to better view the town's ornate rooftops and the beach. Oil on 8"h x 6"w Ray Mar panel. SOLD.

Deauville Beach

A painting of Deauville beach in Normandy, France. At 7:30 am, the beach is very peaceful with only a few people taking morning walks. There were also a few horses, as the town has an equestrian complex and participates in many equestrian activities. Oil on 6"h x 12"w stretched linen. SOLD.

Honfleur Rooftops

When you walk up the hill, away from the hustle and bustle of the harbor area in Honfleur, France, you see this view of rooftops and trees. I believe it is along the same street as the Eugene Boudin museum. Oil on 20"h x 24"w x 1 1/2" stretched canvas. SOLD.

Deauville Beach Umbrellas

One of the reasons I chose to visit Deauville, France in May was because of the colorful umbrellas that line the beach. On the day we arrived, it was very cold and windy, so nobody was sitting on the beach, and the umbrellas were all folded up. On the other two days, we were very fortunate to have sunny, yet cool weather, and the umbrellas were out and people frolicked on the beach. It was not bathing suit weather, but most people rolled up their pants and shirt sleeves. I thought it was strange that nobody walked around in their bare feet, and I'm sure everyone thought I was a weirdo when I removed my shoes to walk in the sand. At that time I thought it may be my only beach trip of the year, so I had to enjoy it as much as possible. The photo that I used as reference for this painting was taken late in the afternoon when the beach was a little less crowded. Oil on 6"h x 8"w Ray Mar panel. SOLD.
