Snowy Night in Budapest

 

In 2018, my husband and I took a last minute trip to Budapest after I was offered an opportunity to have an exhibit at a gallery in the spring. I wanted new subject matter, especially of cozy cafe interiors. We arrived in wintry conditions, which made it the perfect time to frequent the cafes and bath houses. After emerging from a cafe in early evening, we walked onto snow covered streets. Warm lights from the businesses, traffic and park in the distance mixed with the cool atmosphere. We had to stop for some whiskey shortly afterward to warm up. Oil on 24"h x 30"w stretched canvas. SOLD.

Street in Budapest

This was the route we took to the coffee shop in the mornings before tackling the day's itinerary. I can't remember the name of the cafe, but they had some great pretzel sandwiches that included bacon and lettuce. I'd never heard of pretzel sandwiches before, but fortunately a local French bakery in my town makes pretzels, so I can now make my own sandwiches. That's one of the joys of traveling, you find innovative ways to combine foods that you already eat, in addition to discovering new things. Oil on 24"h x 36"w stretched canvas.

Streetcar in Budapest

Yellow is a prominent color in Budapest. The streetcars and many of the buildings are yellow, which greatly cheered up the gloomy days, and made the sunny days even brighter. Oil on 24"h x 36"w stretched canvas.

We were walking back to our part of town from a day of cafe hopping. The people of Budapest are overall very fashionable. As soon as this person walked by I took out my camera because I liked the contrast between his dark clothing and the cool street colors. My husband joked that he knew I would take the guy's picture as soon as he saw the hat. Oil on 24"h x 18"w stretched linen.

I love the maze of streets in Budapest, where you will almost always see someone walking a cute dog. We were on our way to New York Cafe for the second time during our week long stay. The streets seemed cold and gray, but the promise of an ornate, warm cafe kept us going. Oil on 18"h x 24"w stretched canvas. 

Cafe Gerbeaud

A painting of the famous Cafe Gerbeaud in Budapest. I normally have a rule about not eating at the same place twice during a week long stay in any city, but we ended up visiting Gerbeaud twice for the atmosphere, and for the wonderful food and desserts. Oil on 16"h x 20"w stretched linen. SOLD.

Chain Bridge of Budapest II

Though it probably doesn't seem possible, I had a lot of fun on the couple of morning runs I had taken across Chain Bridge when I visited Budapest in February. It was extremely cold, and even colder on the bridges over the Danube because of the wind. But I gained a sense of accomplishment surviving the temperatures and running up the steep hills of Buda. I rewarded myself with a coffee and pastry at one of the cafes near the castle, as well as coffee and pastries at other cafes throughout the day. Oil on 24"h x 30"w stretched linen.

Chain Bridge of Budapest

Crossing this bridge reminded me a little of crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, only it wasn't a double decker bridge with traffic below. Though it was built in 1840, it still has a modern, industrial feel. Oil on 40"h x 30"w stretched canvas.
