Rainy Afternoon in the Piazza Navona

When we visited Rome two years ago, my husband and I decided to do as the Romans do and have a drink at an outdoor cafe in the Piazza Navona. It started raining unexpectedly, so we had to prolong our cafe visit with an extra espresso. Oh well!

Busy Street in Rome

The streets of Rome are chaotic as pedestrians and drivers alike navigate the city. The storefronts along streets such as this one offer many temptations in the form of coffee, crostini, pastries, and clothing shops. Everyone is in a hurry to see as many of these places as possible.

Unpredictable Weather in the Piazza Navona

The weather was unpredictable when we took a day trip to Rome from Florence last year, and we didn't have an umbrella. So, we just ordered another espresso at an outdoor cafe in Piazza Navona and waited for the rain to stop. It passed pretty quickly. The dramatic weather created interesting reflections on the wet cobblestones and created a rainbow for us to see by the time we reached the Vatican. SOLD,

We got lost on our way to find the Spanish Steps in Rome, and ended up climbing up a big hill. We were rewarded with this view, which contains Saint Peter's Basilica in the background. Oil on 15"h x 30"w x 1 1 /2" stretched canvas.

My husband and I recently took a subject matter gathering trip to Italy. We stayed in Florence and took day trips to Rome and some of the smaller towns in Tuscany. This is the first picture I painted from the trip. I snapped the reference photo while walking across one of the bridges to Vatican City, and you can see St. Peter's Basilica in the background.
