Gelateria in Italy

This busy gelateria is located in Lucca, Italy. It was very hot and humid during my visit there many years ago, so frequent gelato stops were important. Oil on 24"h x 30" x 1 1/2" stretched canvas.

This painting is available through the Crate and Barrel | UGallery Artist Originals partnership! SOLD.

Coffee Cat

My Alfred likes to hang out on the kitchen countertop. He even eats his canned breakfast and dinner up there, away from Stella who always tries to steal his food. I painted this from a photo I took while preparing both of our breakfasts one morning. Oil on 6"h x 4"w stretched canvas. SOLD.

Antique Teacups

A painting of some antique teacups that I found at a local antique store. Oil on 6" x 6" stretched linen. Available at the Artists Hand Gallery in Indiana, PA. SOLD.

Cream Puff

A painting of a cream puff, inspired by the fabulous desserts available at Six Hand Bakery of Indiana, PA. I started this painting from life, but ended up eating it halfway through, so I had to paint the rest from photos. Always buy two desserts when using them for subject matter... one to eat and one to paint. Oil on 6" x 6" stretched linen. SOLD.

Farmers' Market Sunflowers

A painting inspired by some sunflowers I purchased at the Indiana, PA Farmers' Market. They are one of my favorite flowers to paint because I don't feel the need to get too nitpicky with the details. Freely applying big masses of yellow, red, black and sometimes purple creates the impression of the flower that seems free in itself. Oil on 16" x 16" stretched linen. SOLD.

Rose' and Onions

While one probably wouldn't want to pair onions with rose' wine due to their overpowering taste, I loved how the purple and green of the onions coordinated with the orange-pink of the rose'. I discovered the onions at our local farmer's market and thought they would be a good addition to my current exhibit at the Artist's Hand Gallery of Indiana, PA. The exhibit runs through October 22nd. SOLD.

Rose, Rose' and Figs

I usually paint from photos because my subjects often include travel scenes or things that move, such as people. Recently I was in the wine store and I saw a lot of pretty bottles of rose' wine and thought they would be great in paintings. We are lucky to have a great farmer's market in our town on weekends where I've been finding flowers and veggies to include. Because my only time limit for still lifes was the life of the rose and the figs, I could take my time and actually paint my recent still lifes from life. Oil on 11"h x 14"w stretched linen. SOLD.

Four Macaroons

A 4" x 6" tiny painting of four macaroons, inspired by Gaby et Jules in Pittsburgh, PA. There will be paintings similar to this one at my show, "New Work by Jolene Joyner and Jonelle Summerfield" at the Artists Hand Gallery in Indiana PA. The reception is this Friday from 6-8 pm, and the show will remain at the gallery until October 22nd. SOLD.

Cafe Gerbeaud

I painted this from a photo I took during our visit to Cafe Gerbeaud in Budapest. We had to go there twice so we could try twice as many desserts. This painting will be on exhibit at The Artist's Hand Gallery in Indiana, PA. The show starts tomorrow and goes through October 22nd. Oil on 20" x 20" stretched linen. SOLD.

Father and Son Sparring

A friend commissioned me to paint this picture of her husband and son sparring during a Jiu Jitsu class. This is my first painting using the martial art as subject matter, and I like painting the drapes of the Gi uniforms. I hope to paint more soon! Oil on 14"h x 12"w stretched linen.

Eastons Beach of Newport

Time for a leisurely stroll on Eastons Beach of Newport, R.I. The water has a red tint to it because of the seaweed, which I've never seen on any other beach. Oil on 12"h x 16"w x 1" stretched linen. SOLD.

Fast Hands

I paint most of my paintings from photographs. I took the reference photo for this one at Elite Combative Systems in Indiana, PA. Sal's hands were a bit too fast for my slow camera, so I used that to create a sense of movement. Oil on 24"h x 18"w stretched linen.

Street in Budapest

This was the route we took to the coffee shop in the mornings before tackling the day's itinerary. I can't remember the name of the cafe, but they had some great pretzel sandwiches that included bacon and lettuce. I'd never heard of pretzel sandwiches before, but fortunately a local French bakery in my town makes pretzels, so I can now make my own sandwiches. That's one of the joys of traveling, you find innovative ways to combine foods that you already eat, in addition to discovering new things. Oil on 24"h x 36"w stretched canvas.

View of Budapest

A view of Budapest from the hills surrounding the castle. It was a cold, snowy day, but the sun visually warmed the building facades. Oil on 30"h x 48"w stretched canvas. SOLD.

Streetcar in Budapest

Yellow is a prominent color in Budapest. The streetcars and many of the buildings are yellow, which greatly cheered up the gloomy days, and made the sunny days even brighter. Oil on 24"h x 36"w stretched canvas.

Morning in Honfleur

It was a sunny spring morning in Honfleur with a bit of haze in the hills. I was always inspired by the paintings of Eugene Boudin, so my mom, a friend, and I stayed in Deauville, and took day trips to Honfleur and Trouville from there. I was able to see the beaches and marinas that inspired both Boudin's and Monet's paintings. Honfleur is peaceful in the mornings while shopkeepers and artists set up their shops for the day. After circling the marina a couple of times to see the buildings and boats from all angles, my mom and I stopped for an espresso at a dock-side cafe, then got lost in the town's alleyways. Oil on 30"h x 40"w stretched canvas. SOLD.

Dusk in Budapest

We were walking back to our part of town from a day of cafe hopping. The people of Budapest are overall very fashionable. As soon as this person walked by I took out my camera because I liked the contrast between his dark clothing and the cool street colors. My husband joked that he knew I would take the guy's picture as soon as he saw the hat. Oil on 24"h x 18"w stretched linen.

Drinks at the Pub

The cool weather outside and the cool light streaming through the window are no match for the warm interior of this Scottish pub. Oil on 14"h x 11"w stretched linen. SOLD.

Alley in Budapest

I love the maze of streets in Budapest, where you will almost always see someone walking a cute dog. We were on our way to New York Cafe for the second time during our week long stay. The streets seemed cold and gray, but the promise of an ornate, warm cafe kept us going. Oil on 18"h x 24"w stretched canvas.

Cafe Gerbeaud

A painting of the famous Cafe Gerbeaud in Budapest. I normally have a rule about not eating at the same place twice during a week long stay in any city, but we ended up visiting Gerbeaud twice for the atmosphere, and for the wonderful food and desserts. Oil on 16"h x 20"w stretched linen. SOLD.

Chain Bridge of Budapest II

Though it probably doesn't seem possible, I had a lot of fun on the couple of morning runs I had taken across Chain Bridge when I visited Budapest in February. It was extremely cold, and even colder on the bridges over the Danube because of the wind. But I gained a sense of accomplishment surviving the temperatures and running up the steep hills of Buda. I rewarded myself with a coffee and pastry at one of the cafes near the castle, as well as coffee and pastries at other cafes throughout the day. Oil on 24"h x 30"w stretched linen.

Chain Bridge of Budapest

Crossing this bridge reminded me a little of crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, only it wasn't a double decker bridge with traffic below. Though it was built in 1840, it still has a modern, industrial feel. Oil on 40"h x 30"w stretched canvas.

Morning in Honfleur

A peaceful morning in Honfleur, France. Oil on 24"h x 36"w x 1 1/2" stretched canvas. This is one of several new paintings recently completed for my show called "From Boxers to Budapest" at Conte Design Lifestyle gallery in Ligonier, PA, which runs through June 26th. The show contains images from the kickboxing class I take as well as scenes from my travels. SOLD

A cranberry cupcake from one of my favorite local bakeries, Market Street Pastries, atop an antique plate. Oil on 4" x 4" stretched canvas.

Macaroons

A trio of macaroons. I painted this from a photo. I thought these would dry out if I painted them from life, and I didn't want to waste them. Anyone from the Pittsburgh area can buy these macaroons from Gaby et Jules in Squirrel Hill, and purchase the painting from Gallery on 43rd Street in Lawrenceville. Oil on 4"h x 6"w stretched canvas.

Catnap

These two friends, Nigel and Malcolm, choose a spot of warm sunlight in which to take their nap. I was going to work on it a bit more, but I like the impressionist quality, especially in the foreground where their fur fades into the background. Oil on 4"h x 6"w stretched canvas.

Alfred

A painting of my handsome man, Alfred. We thought he looked like a bat when we got him as a kitten, and thought about naming him Bruce Wayne. But, we were pretty sure we weren't the first people to think of that, so we named him after Batman's butler. Oil on 4" x 4" stretched canvas. SOLD.

Green Teacup

A painting of a green antique teacup with biscotti. Unlike a lot of other paintings I do, I painted this from life in my studio. Oil on 4" x 4" stretched canvas. SOLD.

Grand Marnier

It is difficult for me to accomplish anything this time of year, so I started some tiny paintings that I can finish in a day or so to gain a sense of accomplishment. This is a sample bottle of Grand Marnier with a shot glass. I have many other tiny paintings on the way! SOLD.
